A new course on hazardous materials and chemical weapons in the USA

Zusammenfassung

Durch die Terroranschläge auf die USA ist ein Umdenken bei den Schwerpunkten in der Notfallmedizin eingetreten. Die verantwortlichen notfallmedizinischen Planungsstäbe in den USA bereiten sich nun auch zunehmend auf ausgedehnte atomare, biologische und chemische (ABC) Angriffe auf die Zivilbevölkerung vor. Beim Notfallpersonal herrscht derzeit allerdings noch ein großes Wissensdefizit auf diesem Gebiet. Gleichzeitig werden Nervengasantidotkits auf US-Notfallfahrzeugen eingeführt und Dekontaminationsanlagen in Krankenhäusern angeschafft. Zusätzliche Schulung des gesamten medizinischen Personals soll Wissensdefizite verringern. Neue Kurse über dieses sehr umfangreiche Wissensgebiet der Notfallmedizin sind gerade in der Entstehung und zunehmend auch im Angebot. In den USA ist der Advanced HAZMAT Life Support ein relativ neuer Kurs über Gefahrengut und chemische Kampfstoffe. Dieser Bericht aus den USA beleuchtet die neuen Trainingsschwerpunkte im Rahmen der Schulung von Notfallpersonal und medizinischem Fachpersonal.

Abstract

The terror attacks on the United States redirected the focus on the main topics in emergency medicine. In the U.S., the committees responsible for emergency medical planning are now preparing more for nuclear, biologic and chemical (NBC) attacks on the civilian population on a large scale. Emergency personnel currently demonstrate a lack of knowledge in this area. At the same time, U.S. ambulances are being equipped with nerve gas antidote kits and hospitals purchase decontamination equipment. Education is geared to reduce the deficits of information among health care personnel. New courses about this comprehensive topic in emergency medicine are currently being established and offered. In the U.S., the Advanced HAZMAT Life Support is a relatively new course about hazardous materials and chemical warfare. This report reviews the new focus of training of emergency personnel and health care providers.
